Fiestas and events of March

Before the famous Easter Lent begins, Alicante's Carnival festival begins, usually at the end of February or the beginning of March (the date changes depending on the year). With a duration of one week, this beautiful custom floods the streets of the city with costumes, music and color.

These festivities are the second most important and attract more people, just after the bonfires of San Juan. It is a completely open party in which anyone can participate in all the events and activities that are celebrated.

Holy Week is celebrated in Alicante as a celebration of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Different confraternities carry out several processions to commemorate the events, from the cathedral of San Nicolás, during the dates between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday.

There are 28 processions through the city, declared of tourist interest of the Valencian Community.

Also called La Peregrina, it is a Catholic pilgrimage that is celebrated in Alicante on Thursday after Good Friday (which also varies from year to year) and brings together more than 260,000 pilgrims.

It starts in the cathedral of San Nicolás, and runs about 8 km to end in the monastery of Santa Faz, where the relic of Santa Faz de Alicante is prayed and venerated.

It is a celebration with a tradition of more than 500 years.

Les fogueres de Sant Joan (in Valencian) are held annually in the city. From the 20th to the 24th of June the joy of these festivities floods the city.

The city is partly closed to traffic to start building the bonfires "La plantá" and here everything begins. The festival continues during this time until it ends with the burning of monuments throughout the city.

The patron saint of the city receives several processions and compliments during these festivities. So old that they date from the year 1530, this festivity is celebrated on the 5th of August of each year.

The acts in honour of Nuestra Señora del Remedio begin on 3 August and take place over several days, starting at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Alicante.
