FESTIVALS IN VILLAJOYOSA


January  Festivity of San Antonio Abad

In mid-January, in the Hermitage of San Antonio, this day is celebrated in honour of the patron saint of animals.Villajoyosa is filled with colour and noise with fireworks and church bells.  Several activities are also carried out, among which the blessing of the animals stands out. 


April Easter

It is one of the most important celebrations of the whole year, which is eagerly awaited by the whole town. An image of Christ is walked through the streets of the municipality, accompanied by the music of the bands, until you reach the mouth of the river. 


May Tears of Santa Marta

It is a celebration, also of religious character, where the image of the virgin is commemorated. It begins on the 1st of the month and lasts until the 8th, without forgetting that this last day is celebrated the great offering of flowers where a procession is prepared in honour of its patron saint. 

June Eve of San Juan

With a beautiful celebration, at the end of the month the summer season is welcomed. In this celebration, flowers are thrown into the sea in honor of the sailors who have lost their lives.  Small workshops are prepared for all ages during the day. During the night, families and neighbors gather on the beaches to wet their feet on the shore as a tradition. 


July Festivity of the Virgen del Carmen

This is the patron saint of sailors, and for its history Villajoyosa is a place closely linked to the sea and why this virgin is so important.  The celebration is divided into 3: Celebration of a mass, a procession and a boat ride.  Accompanied throughout the day by various activities in the port for all who visit the place. 


July Moors and Christians

At the end of July and in honour of Santa Marta, the long-awaited Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) are celebrated, a tradition that has been repeated for more than 200 years.  Every year it is remembered how the inhabitants of the village defended the place from several attacks by pirates. 

Various acts are carried out such as parades, celebrations, official dinners and varied shows. In addition to the famous parades of Moors and Christians with their music bands. 

We must not forget that this is a festival of International Tourist Interest.

August Saint Bartholomew

In honour of the Saint, at the end of the month the festivities are held in the so-called Barrio del Pati Fosc. 

The celebration begins after a rocket that marks the beginning and during several days, musical events, contests, parades, concerts and more are prepared. 


August Saint Augustine

This month also commemorates St. Augustine. The image of the Saint is taken to the beach and events in his honor are carried out during days.  On these dates the "Despertá" takes place and the city is flooded with fireworks and music.


September Feast of Saint Michael

This is the oldest and most traditional celebration in Villajoyosa. At the end of the month they begin in honour of San Miguel.

They consist of a gala dinner and the beginning of the festivities, the big contest of "Paellas" and "Vaquillas", ending with fireworks, a mass and chocolate dinner.
